The Insurance Charities
Representative: K Canniffe BCL ALIA @ 021 4321321
One of the major concerns of the elderly is how they will manage if
their health deteriorates. Though community care
should ensure that everyone has the help they need,
lack of resources means that this is not always so.
If a pensioner has to go into a nursing home, a
private home may be the only option – and can be
very expensive. Even for a retired insurance
employee with a reasonable pension, the cost of
nursing home care can make it almost impossible for
his or her partner to manage on a much reduced
income. Help in misfortune is available to all
members and former members of the Insurance
profession subject to certain guidelines. Anyone who
has been wholly engaged or employed in Insurance (or
their dependents) for five years or more are
eligible. Assistance is not normally provided if
membership or employment ended more than ten years
before retirement or before the misfortune giving
rise to the application.
The Charities Fund can help supplement the incomes
of both partners and ensure that any additional
expenses are paid. Help has been given in the past
to adapt homes for wheelchair use and to help people
who have not worked in the business for a number of
years.
Remember the Insurance Charities, your industry’s
charity, cares for colleagues who are in need. The
Cork Charities Day Collection and Charity lunch were
generously supported in 2007/8 and with your
continued support this excellent work can continue.
Thank you to all concerned.

ASSOCIATION FOR RETIRED INSURANCE STAFF (ARIS)
Chairman: Maurice Griffin
This association was formed in October 1981 to fulfill the needs of
retired Insurance persons. Members meet at Douglas
Golf Club on a regular basis. Speakers are invited
to deal with a wide variety of subjects such as
taxation, travel and others of interest to members.
Outings are arranged and these have proven to be
most enjoyable. An invitation is extended to all
retired colleagues to participate in the many
functions arranged by the Association. New members
are always welcome and contact can be made through
our Hon Secretary Mr. Ray Fitzgerald, Telephone
4274411 c/o, McCarthy Insurance Group, 3/4 South
Mall, Cork.
