OUR LADYS HOSPITAL CRUMLIN RECEIVE €9,800 RAISED BY EOIN MURPHY AND THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF GALWAY

The cheque for €9,800 was presented recently by The Insurance Institute of Galway President Padraic Benson.  This was the culmination of a fund raising effort by the local institute and Mr. Eoin Murphy, who on their behalf completed a charity run at the New York City Marathon.

Eoin and The Insurance Institute of Galway make a marathon effort

for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

It is an unfortunate feature of today’s modern life that, despite the Celtic Tiger’s presence, many vital medical and research services required by Irish communities and people; including many children, are not comprehensively provided for.  This gap in services is provided by admirable and tireless fundraisers, charities and voluntary groups.

Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin is an acute pediatric teaching hospital with 243 beds.  It is Ireland’s largest pediatric hospital and is responsible for the provision of the majority of tertiary care services for children and medical research for childhood illnesses.  The quality of research carried out at the centre is best recognised by its international reputation in pediatric medicine and in its publications.  The research laboratories constitute a major component of the activities of the Children's Research Centre.  Over the past 20 years the Hospital has completed several major projects, to include an Intensive Care Unit, the expansion of the Radiological Department including the installation of a CT Scanner; an Oncological Unit and new laboratories.  Further facilities include a Medical Genetics Department, a new Accident & Emergency Department, a new Entrance to the Hospital, combined with a new Admissions Department, a new Burns Unit.  The hospital is currently engaged in the preparation of a Development Control Plan which will form the master plan for the future development for Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin to allow it to continue to provide the highest standards of health care to the children of Ireland.

Unfortunately, despite the great work done by Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, it is still dependant on fundraising to provide financial support for their work.  Therefore, this year, as its charity project The Insurance Institute of Galway, with the energetic help of Eoin Murphy, is fundraising for the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.

Eoin Murphy (30) is a native of Malahide, County Dublin.  He came to Galway in 2004 where he met his partner Kathleen, a Mayo native, and he has not budged since.  He works for OSG (Chartered Loss Adjusters).  Eoin has always enjoyed running and sports of all sorts.  Running a marathon is something that had always been at the back of his mind, but there never seemed to be a ‘right time’ or a ‘good time’ to do one.  However, in 2006, Eoin pulled on his runners with the goal of running the Dublin City marathon for the first time.  By now, he is a familiar feature on the streets of Galway.  Early on in his marathon training, Eoin realised that it was madness that this effort should be wasted in terms of fundraising.  Because of the great work done by Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and the fact that his family, like so many others, has availed of its services, when it came to choosing a charity there was no doubt in Eoin’s mind as to which charity should benefit from his current marathon effort.  Not satisfied with having achieved his goal in Dublin, Eoin, along with his colleagues in The Insurance Institute of Galway, decided that together they would take part in running (Eoin) and fundraising for (The Insurance Institute of Galway) the New York City marathon in November 2008.

The New York City Marathon is an annual event run over a 26.2 mile course through all five boroughs of New York City.  It is the largest marathon in the world, with almost 40,000 finishers in 2007.  It begins on Staten Island near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which is closed to traffic for the event.  In the opening minutes of the race, the bridge is filled with runners, creating a dramatic spectacle that is closely associated with the event.  The runners pass through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Harlem.  The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970 and last year it was won by Kenyon Martin Lel and Britain’s Paula Radcliffe.

So, The Insurance Institute of Galway, Eoin Murphy and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin would like you to join in this marathon effort being made, by sending the most generous donation possible.  All proceeds go to the Children’s Hospital.  Sponsorship cards are available on request or alternatively, your donation will be very gratefully accepted :
