Mission Statement

The Insurance Institute of Ireland is dedicated to continuous professional development through technical insurance education, training and ongoing support of people at all levels within the insurance and related financial services sector.

Since its inception, The Insurance Institute of Ireland is a not for profit membership organisation which is proud to be a leading professional and educational body for the insurance industry and its current membership exceeds 10,000. 
 

Our aim at The Insurance Institute of Ireland is:

  • To provide, exclusively or in synergic partnership, relevant programmes of quality insurance education;
  • To integrate and progressively mediate with other established professional and academic bodies in the promotion of insurance education;
  • To anticipate and meet the training and development needs of its members and the industry with a particular focus on maintaining and supporting an up-to-date CPD Policy and Programme for qualified members;
  • To ensure a superior level of service to members, students and the industry;
  • To set and maintain high standards of professionalism through the implementation of its Code of Conduct and Ethics;
  • To ensure membership competence compliance through 'The Professional Standards Advisory Board - General Insurance' (PSAB-GI)
  • To operate a very successful and beneficial Insurance Charity; and
  • To provide, particularly at local level, valued networking, sports, social and promotional events which enhance the standing of the industry and promotes community awareness and responsibility.



National Council

The Institute is governed by The National Council, consisting of: 

  • President, Deputy President, Vice President;
  • Local Institute elected members; and
  • Officers appointed by the National Council, comprising of the Chief Executive and Chairmen of all Standing Committees and Working Parties.



Local Institutes


There are five Local Institutes – Cork, Dublin (incorporating the Dundalk Centre), Galway, Limerick and Sligo. We also maintain close ties with The Belfast Insurance Institute. The Local Institutes co-ordinate educational, sporting and social events that support the members in the regions and provide ongoing communication, market awareness and an enhanced sense of community spirit.  These networks are essential for adapting to an ever-changing and competitive environment.



Education

Internal Programmes

Qualifications range from foundation level to competence level, practitioner specialist level, Bachelor of Financial Services, and our ultimate professional badges of honour, Associateship, and Fellowship.  Examinations are held twice yearly in October and April nationwide.

Foundation Level
  • Insurance Foundation Certificate (IFC)
  • Life & Pensions Administration Certificate (LPAC)
  • Private Medical Insurance Certificate (PMC)
Competence Level
  • Certified Insurance Practitioner Diploma (CIP) with streams in both General and Private Medical Insurance (Also incorporating joint CIP awarded by the Institute and IBA)

  • Qualified Financial Advisor Diploma (QFA)
    (In partnership with LIA and IOB, administration by LIA)

  • Diploma in Loss Adjusting (DIP L.A.)

  • Diploma in Life Administration (DLA)

  • Diploma in Life Disability Underwriting (DLDU) / Claims (DLDC) (In partnership with The Chartered Insurance Institute and the Assurance Medical Society)

Professional Level

 

  • Joint Financial Services Diploma (Dip. FS. Ins.)
    (In partnership with LIA and IOB)

  • Bachelor of Financial Services (BFS)
    (In partnership with LIA, IOB, UCD)

  • Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII)
    (In partnership with The Chartered Insurance Institute)

  • Fellowship of The Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII)
    (In partnership with The Chartered Insurance Institute)

Professional qualifications are recognised throughout the sector by the designatory letters FCII, ACII, BFS, Dip. FS. Ins., DLA, DIP L.A., DLDC, and DLDU, CIP and QFA. 

Associateship and Fellowship holders can apply for the titles of Chartered Insurer, Chartered Insurance Practitioner, Chartered Insurance Broker and Chartered Financial Planner.

External Programmes

In pursuing its objective of ‘…providing exclusively or in partnership, relevant programmes of quality insurance education and technical training’, the Institute has, through continual active involvement with other established professional and academic bodies, initiated and contributed towards the implementation of many external personal development opportunities.

Insurance specific education programmes are available through the following educational bodies:

University College Dublin
  • BComm. with an Insurance Specialism
     

  • BFS (distance learning part time in conjunction with the LIA and the Institute of Bankers of Ireland)

University of Limerick
  • BA (International Insurance and European Studies)
     

  • BBS (Major Option in Risk Mgt. and Insurance)

All of these programmes receive generous exemptions from the Advanced Diploma in Insurance programme (ACII).

Cork College of Commerce, Mercy College Galway and some PLC colleges, including Whitehall and Pearse College, also offer the Institute’s Insurance Foundation Course.

Introducing students to the world of insurance studies, the Institute continues to forge strong links and progress relationships with other institutions for the purpose of developing and widening the range of insurance study programmes available.



Continuous Professional Development

The Institute offers high quality technical training and professional development programmes for individuals that complement and support their organisation’s training initiatives and assist members with CPD requirements at all relevant levels.

These are based on six broad areas:

  • Technical Training;
  • Professional Briefing & Workshop Updates;
  • Regional CPD Roadshows;
  • CPD lunch-time & breakfast series;
  • CPD conference;
  • Online CPD.

In addition, a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) scheme is in place which provides Certified Insurance Practitioners (CIP) & CPD Members (grandfathered individuals),  with the opportunity to retain their standards of professional competence thus ensuring that they remain at the forefront of the profession throughout their careers. On 23 February 2008 the Institute established an independent board "The Professional Standards Advisory Board - General Insurance" (PSAB-GI).  The board guarantees harmonization of standards in CPD for the General Insurance market. Through the vehicle of the board, the IBA, PIBA, IIF, III & the QFA Board, under the independent chairmanship work together to implement, maintain and supervise compliance of Continuous Professional Development for all CIP holders in General Insurance.

Industry Institute’s key stakeholders have viewed the importance of the board as a vital contributor to the future direction of the Institute and to cementing the future of CPD.



Membership

The Institute’s Members are engaged in a variety of different areas of the insurance and financial services sector, reflective of the wide range of disciplines within the industry.  Membership types are categorised in order to facilitate these diversified interests and offer maximum benefit through customised personal development programmes.

International Recognition

Members are also fortunate to enjoy joint associations with our UK equivalent, The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).  Together, we provide globally recognised programmes of examinations and professional designations.
